A Hot Mess

I am opinionated.  I don’t much care who knows it.  If you know me in “real” life, you are quite aware of both of these points

I love food. I am not the most talented cook – but I love to feed people, I love to eat good food, and I care about it.  I care about the ritual of eating food, of sharing food, and the pure joy of food, with others.

I appreciate people who also care about food, and who really enjoy sharing the beauty of food, the comradery pf breaking bread and sharing the special kind of bliss that good food and good company create.

But back to the “opinionated” part.   Some of you might take offense to what I think of some of my fellow “foodies”. Well. If so, you know how to use the “unsubscribe” or “unfollow” button, if you so choose.

I attended my first foodie tweetup this week.  Let’s just say, I expected more grace from you people.

Hot Chicks

Something’s off kilter.  I haven’t wanted to cook in ages.  That is a problem.  It throws everything off.  I’ve been moody, snarky.  Not warm and fuzzy.

Old-Fashioned Heat

I am not old fashioned when it comes to dating , sex, or much else really.

However,  I do think that too many people are too quick to go for what’s easy, fast, readily available.  I don’t (always) agree that faster, easier is better.

I don’t use a microwave (okay, sometimes, but very very rarely).  I love old things (recipes, houses, furniture, vintage clothing, dishes).  I never ever deep fry. I bake. I grill. I simmer. I like to cook the old fashioned way. I even wear an apron (vintage, of course, with cherries on it).

I like to relax like a man in 1962:  I prefer to be at home with a nice pinot , zinfandel,  or scotch over going to a bar.  My favorite cocktail is an Old Fashioned.

Drink, Sweat, Eat

I’m sure you’re heard of the movie “Eat, Pray, Love”, yes?  I hope beyond hope that you know it was a book first. Right?!

I know there are those among you who don’t read books, or who haven’t read that particular book (don’t worry, this is not a whole post dedicated to the virtues of the book… but indulge me – I will spend a few paragraphs on it).   It is not a story about Julia Roberts and her gastronomic adventures around the world.

It’s a story of an actual woman who went through the same thing that millions of women the world over go through. Significant , life changing relationship ended (in her case, in divorce). Heartache.  Rebound relationship (with a younger man, I might add, meow).  Life-changing decision, growth, exploration, food, extra lbs, renewal, acceptance, yadda yadda (Yes, I “yadda yadda-ed” the good part).

It was a book that really meant a great deal to me, and I took away a large life lesson, but that’s a bit more personal than this girl gets in writing.

The second best thing from that book? Oh, as if,  like you don’t know.

The. Food.
